Diving in
Cozumel has been listed as one of the top dive sites in the
world. All of Cozumel is considered a marine habitat and its
inhabitants are protected by law.
Strong currents make most of the diving in Cozumel "drift dives"
and that in itself requires divers to have more experience to
safely dive here.
When I dove in Cozumel I used Sand Dollar Sports which seemed to
be a pretty reputable shop that had operations in most of the
major hotels on the island.
The staff at San Dollar Sports were helpful and courteous and
most of the staff members were bilingual. The diving was great
and the marine life along the various reefs were abundant as
well. The only criticism I have is some of the dive outings
were unorganized and sometimes overcrowded.
Cozumel is made up of a series of reefs that offer some good
wall diving with some spectacular drop-offs. Punta Sur II is a
great deep dive with nice swim-thrus and caverns. Columbia Reef
has some VERY large Groupers that are so used to divers you can
actually pet them.
Overall I had a decent experience with San Dollar Sports which
gives them my 2 Dive Flag Rating for a fair experience. |
