Diving around the Kona coast has some the best diving the Hawaiian Islands have to offer. From lava tubes, arches, swim-thrus to caverns there are fantastic diving opportunities just waiting for you to experience.

When it comes to dive operators on the island, I found the staff at Kona Coast Divers to be knowledgeable and friendly. Their dive packages cater to a wide variety of skill levels and they offer many exciting dive spots to choose from.

Kona Coast Divers is best known for their special night dive they call "Manta Ray Madness". This is a very interesting dive that takes place in about 30-35 feet of water. Dive staff place underwater studio lights that are pointed at the surface. These lights attract swarms of plankton, which in turn attract the Manta Rays.

Groups of divers sit around the flood lights in a circle waiting for the Manta Rays to arrive and begin feeding. The wait doesn't take long and before you know it several Manta Rays begin to swoop through the plankton. These graceful and gentle giants perform acrobatic acts over the heads of the divers. It is a phenomenal experience to see these majestic creatures up close and personal, and one you will not soon forget.

When traveling to Kona, I highly recommend this night dive and it is safe for divers of any skill level.

The Manta Ray Madness dive experience is one reason why Kona Coast Divers receives my 3 Dive Flag Rating for a generally good experience.

Editors Note:

In November of 2005, Kona Coast Divers were acquired by another dive operator on the Island and is now part of the Jack's Diving Locker family.

Having never dove with this operator, I am unable to rate the operation post merger.
